Niall Mateer is a Senior Advisor at CIEE. He was Director of Research Outreach at the University of California Office of the President until 2000. In this position he helped in the oversight and development of CIEE in its early years, and worked with CIEE in its contractual relations with the California Energy Commission. He facilitated the broader relationship between the CEC and the University of California. Dr. Mateer participated in many research initiatives throughout California during the 1990s and oversaw the administration of many University of California systemwide research organizations, including the UC Energy Institute, the National Institute for Environmental Change, and CIEE. Dr. Mateer served on the Board of the California Space Technology Alliance, promoting the California space program. In 2000, Dr. Mateer left California to become Executive Director of the University of California Trust (UK), based in his home town of London, England. He returned to America in 2005 to become a consultant on university management and various technology transfer projects. Dr. Mateer is an earth scientist by training and has been active in 35 countries, working as a researcher, a geoscience project leader for UNESCO, and editor of an international geological journal. He received his B.Sc. from Durham University (UK) and his Ph.D. from the University of Uppsala (Sweden).
