Brown, Merwin Director, PIER Transmission Research Program
Merwin Brown is Director of California’s Public Interest Energy Research Transmission Research Program (TRP). Dr. Brown manages a team of professionals who develop and administer technology research to assure a reliable, safe, affordable and environmentally sound electric grid for California’s future. During three decades in electric and gas utilities, and at U.S. Department of Energy national labs, he has worked for such firms as Pacific Gas and Electric, and Arizona Public Service, and in the employ of Battelle, at the Pacific Northwest National Lab and the National Renewable Energy Lab.. Dr. Brown has managed private and public interest energy technology R&D programs up to $50 million per year with groups as large as 100 scientists and engineers, and R&D projects as large as $20 million. He has a comprehensive knowledge of the electric and natural gas industries, and emerging energy technologies. He is trained and experienced in strategic business planning and group facilitation. Past job functions have also included management of client and stakeholder relationships and market planning. Dr. Brown has numerous technical publications and presentations to his credit, and served on over 20 advisory committees, commissions and boards, including as an Arizona Solar Energy Commissioner, on the BoD of the American Council for An Energy-Efficient Economy, and for EPRI and NREL. He holds BS and PhD degrees in nuclear engineering.
