Karl Brown is the Deputy Director of CIEE. A member of the staff since 1991, he has 20 years of experience in energy systems engineering. Mr. Brown leads CIEE's Building and Industrial Systems Program, oversees the senior administrative staff, and supports the CIEE Director in coordinating technical and administrative activities. His work includes both planning and managing end-use energy R&D and energy planning, policy development, and program coordination for UC facilities. His R&D management for CIEE has included projects on HVAC duct leakage, diagnostics for commissioning and operations, and efficient design of facilities for high-technology industries (e.g., laboratories). His most recent R&D management activity involves leadership of a team organizing beta tests, demonstrations, and other technology transfer of PIER products on UC and CSU campuses. Mr. Brown's work with UC facilities has also included energy and environmental stewardship planning, standards development, and design review for the new Merced campus. He has also made substantial contributions to the development of the UC Green Building and Clean Energy Policy. His own research interest is currently focused on energy performance monitoring and benchmarking for facility operations and planning. Mr. Brown has been active in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standards and Technical Committees, the Association of Energy Engineers Bay Area Chapter, the Advanced Lighting Advisory Committee, the Laboratories for the 21st Century Pilot Partnership Program, and the UC/CSU/IOU 2004-2005 Energy Efficiency Partnership. He has a BS and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley.
